Reading Assessments
In the first session, each child reads and writes with me to assess their current skill level. As we read, I ask the child to retell key elements of the story and observe their comprehension. Their understanding of the vocabulary is also noted. Oral reading by the child provides phonics and sight word data along with fluency. I will also ask the child to write about themselves, this shows spelling and writing skills.
Testing is also an important part of the first assessment. I use a combination of published and teacher-made tests in the following categories: phonics, sight words, spelling, writing and comprehension.
Tutoring Sessions
Lesson plans are customized to meet the individual learning needs of your child based on their assessments. Visual, auditory and movement activities are part of each lesson. Games and hands-on activities also play an important role in each lesson. Phonics, spelling, writing, sight words and comprehension are worked on daily.
I will design a unique but flexible lesson plan, that can change daily, to keep your child engaged and learning. What we focus on each session depends on many factors including attention, interests, motivation, skill level and personality.
The Joy of Reading is fostered with titles selected specifically for your child; e.g. Warriors for cat lovers, Cat in the Hat for Dr. Suess fans, Fancy Nancy for dress-up lovers.
Progress reports are given on a monthly basis.
